GD Comparisons
GD Comparisons

Zico - GD Comparisons.

Okay, let be real. You have to compare Zico to GD. Zico, whether purposefully or not, is a lot like G-Dragon, style wise. With his new teaser, he got on an outfit that looks like GD would wear, and he got his painted on tattoos, like GD, and he got blonde dreads it like a cross between GD yellow braids in One Of A Kind and Zico old dreads, and what looks like Chrome Hearts jewelry, which GD practically bleeds. Zico 100% has his own flavor, and in no way is JUST LIKE G-Dragon, but there is definitely similarity in that style.

Personally, I think Zico does this on purpose. We know he likes/admires GD as an idol, and he probably knows people compare him to GD all the time, and let be honest, GD is a good person to emulate. What I love about Zico is, he loves a lot of his senior rappers, K-rappers or American rappers, and he not too full of himself to admit that love, or openly love them. The kid oozes talent, so much that it insane, and yet he humble enough to respect and fanboy over those that came before him. And it not some calculated move to make people like him. I believe he genuinely loves and respects the rappers/artists he mentioned or spoken highly of, or spoken to.

I pause for a moment to say that I love G-Dragon, and I love Zico. Out of K-pop in general, they are the two idols that have a special place in my heart. I will not have anyone speaking negatively of my two boys. Which is what this post is about.

Notice, I said that GD Zico are similar in STYLE. That means, I don think they similar in any other way, really. Their personalities are different, their musical styles are different And that when I think people are wrong for comparing them. Comparing their looks, and their clothing styles and swag, that works, because it is similar, whether purposefully or by chance. Comparing them as artists doesn work. And here why.

I hear people always say Zico is a better rapper than GD, or something. But then, they take one of Zico mixtape songs and compare it to one of GD fun singles.

That not a proper comparison. That like comparing Tupac Love to Nas and saying that means Nas is a better rapper. You don compare someone best work to someone radio single; that not fair.

First, it has to be taken into account that GD doesn make mixtapes. He just doesn Either he feels he not in that stage in his career, or he just has no interest in it, but he doesn make mixtapes. Zico, being a newer rapper, and a rapper who is more of an underground rapper that sort of ended up in an idol group, he makes mixtapes to be able to say what he wants to say.

BUT GD SAYS WHAT HE WANTS TO SAY, too, in his songs. He just metaphorical. So, say something happens in his life, and he wants to talk about it. He turn it into a love story, and write extremely poetic lyrics about it.

Second, it has to be taken into account that GD is not JUST a rapper, and hasn been JUST a rapper in forever. He writes nearly all of Big Bang songs, including his members solos, and on his two solo albums, a lot of the songs were sung and not rapped, or a mix of singing rapping. He doesn make songs as much, the way Zico does.

Personally, I think Zico has a more interesting cadence than GD recently, but I also think that a lot of fangirls mistake his cool cadence for better skills. Cadence is like your rhythm, in rap. How you flow. Another thing to take into consideration is that Zico voice is quite deep, while Ji is light. This also makes him sound more to fans, and makes it sound like, yes, Zico is much better at rapping.

Because he sounds a lot more like American rappers.

Personally, I think Zico lyrics are more introspective than deep. Like Nas, again! Speaking about issues, speaking about his personal experience, being honest that introspective rap. And he really, really amazing at introspective rap. You don see it much in K-pop, but you do see it a lot in K-hip-hop.

Which brings me back to GD. GD isn making a lot of introspective songs. But the reason is because he a K-pop rapper. He usually only writes raps either to compliment a song, like when he features on someone song, or when he writes his rap part for a Big Bang song. Other than that, he making songs for the radio. Songs you wanna dance to, party too, etc. Those usually become his singles, or Big Bang singles. But the album album usually has beautifully written songs by GD, but they not always rap. So, GD doesn write a lot of introspective rap, but rather, writes deep ballads or includes clever metaphor or double meaning into his other songs, so that he can say what he wants without being inflammatory. Zico, on the other hand, on his mixtapes, hasn seemed to worry about being inflammatory at all, taking his cue from American rappers.

There was another point I wanted to talk about, but I forget what it is now. But basically, what I trying to say is that comparing GD Zico as rappers is just weird, to me. They two completely different types of artists.

Zico is a young rapper who wants to be a great rapper, but happens to be in an idol group.

GD is a young musician, who started as a rapper, but wants to be known for the great music he makes and the lyrics he writes.

Zico is what GD might have been had he not gone to YG when he was like 12, and spent his teen years being an underground rapper instead. But where GD is in his life and career, GD concerns are more so lyrics, producing, and fashion. GD is a more rounded artist, while Zico is more of a rapper, whose passion is in rap, and an up-coming producer.

When people say is better than GD they talking about cadence and intonation and introspection; they talking about rap, which is just not the full story for GD. And it makes GD sound like he a joke, when he not.

Now, I think GD did want to prove he can still rap, with this mini-album, since there a focus on hip-hop, and he raps a lot faster.

People also should realize cadence is style, and is applied per song by a lot of rappers. Look at by Jay-Z Kanye West. They use a slow cadence in that song, but for style and effect, not because they can rap. They are considered some of the best rappers in the game.

So, when you go to High High and GD TOP use a slow cadence, it because that the style they wanted in that song, not because they can do other cadences.

Also, if you can understand Korean, you can really judge these songs accurately. A lot of times, English translation doesn give you the entire feel of a song. GD TOP, for instance, use a lot of double meaning that, even translated, doesn even begin to show how clever it really was.

Anyway, praise Zico, that boy is a bias list ruiner, and I love every drop of him.

It just that, it really hard to stan Zico when every time Zico emerges, some dumb fangirl who probably knows fuck all about rap, anyway makes some stupid declaration about Zico being so much better than GD at life, and that annoying as hell. Zico is amazing, and I would never take anything from him saying he is 1 not understanding how art works, 2 not understanding that they so different, to me, their art doesn truly compare, and 3 making GD seem like he some showtune singing chump or something.

Don get Zico or GD fucked up. Understand that they are two different artists with different musical styles and aspirations and comparing them is just wrong.
